The importance of regular dental visits

It’s August already! We are thinking about back to school and the cooler fall weather. After the extreme heat these past few weeks we are ready for some moderate temperatures.

As you get ready for fall, you should consider making a dental checkup appointment. Regular dental exams can identify and prevent a variety of oral health issues.

Each dental checkup appointment is based on your needs and consists of several steps. We start by reviewing your medical history, current dental status, and your dental concerns. A checkup appointment also includes a professional dental teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar that can cause decay and gum (periodontal) disease. A checkup includes a visual exam of your mouth to check for decay, signs of wear, cracks and other problems with fillings and crowns. We also check the soft tissues of your mouth for signs of oral cancer. As we check your gums for periodontal disease, we note any redness or swelling present. We usually include x-rays to detect conditions that cannot be easily seen. X-rays show decay between the teeth, tartar buildup below the gums, and bone loss. Other problems such as abscesses and cysts can also be seen. Even if you don’t have pain, you can have a major problem occurring in your mouth.

Regular checkups are important because neglecting dental issues can lead to serious problems. These can be more painful and more expensive to treat.
